Potpourri

Some happenings from the last week...

- I was supposed to have my Lasik surgery today. Turns out my surgery was never scheduled. I had scheduled the consulation for last Friday, and I guess I was told that April 3 was open, but I guess I never did make an appointment. The situation could have been pretty bad, as my parents had planned on coming up this weekend to visit and to take care of me. Plus, I was going to be in training the next 6 weeks so it'd be impossible to take a vacation day or two to get this done. Luckily, their next appointment was for Good Friday, which I have off. That actually saves me 2 vacation days! It sucked having to take my contacts back out, as I had buried them in the back of my closet.

- My shoulder, which I had injured trying to lift weights back in Decemebr (quit the snickering), had suddenly made a turn for the worse as I tried to do some physical therapy on it. I could barely move it. I saw the doc on Wednesday, and he gave me a cortisone shot. Within like 10 seconds, the pain was gone. Pretty scary, now I know how those football players get shot up and then can play even though they have a mangled shoulder or something. What scares me is that just 10 seconds ago it was hurting a lot, and now it doesn't, so therefore I have no idea what damage is going on in there while I'm moving it. It feels like it's kinda loose and the joint cracks all the time.

Physical therapy - I don't know, I went to phyiscal therapy today, and he probably spent a total of 10 minutes with me. He was working on another guy, and I sat there waiting a long time between reps. This seems to happen every time I go there. The doc wants me to go 2-3 times a week. I would balk at that if it was just the time I hafta take off of work to go out there, but additional to that is I have a $15 co pay everytime I go! 2-3 times a week = $120-$180 a month. For 15 minutes of "lift your arms up 10 times"?

-Softball starts tomorrow! It's so nice to be able to get out there and play. This year we have a corporate sponsor (my friend Eric, who left P&G to run his family's uniform business), who's company is aptly named "Scrubs 4U." It probably helps that Eric's the starting shortstop. Not sure how much I can throw with this shoulder, but luckily I just play pitcher (which in slowpitch softball isn't too big a deal). This is the year I will be a legit hitter, which has been a big hole in my game.

Oh man, that's hilarious. When did you find out you didn't have an appointment? When you showed up at the office, or beforehand?

My friend actually negotiated the price down from $4500 to $3000. She's got balls (figuratively).

On a whim, I decided to call and confirm because I had a bad feeling that the actual appointment wasn't confirmed. So it's good I did that.

Yeah, I'd love to learn how to negotiate stuff like this. I think mainly it's a mindset of being able to get what you want but then being able to live with yourself after. For me having Humana insurance saves me 15%.

Hmm, those guys are bastards for having you come in so much. For my ankles, I had to wait about 15 minutes, but after that, the therapist was very attentive. We did about 30-45 minutes of stuff and he taught me exercises to do at home. I think I went in 2 more times with about a month in between.

You should tell that person that you're really busy and if there were exercises you could do at home to reduce the # of sessions, that would be helpful. Otherwise, it sounds like a big waste of time and money.
